What is Listening?

According to the Cambridge dictionary, the verb listen, to give attention to someone or something in order to hear him, her, or it.(https://dictionary.cambridge.org/dictionary/english/listening) From this definition, we see that listening involves paying or giving attention to something or someone. In this year, we have to be careful what or who we listen to because that can influence our minds, actions, and decisions either positively or negatively. It is very vital that we choose to listen to the right person and no other person than God the Holy Spirit. When we give the Holy Spirit room to speak to us, he takes control and guides us to do the right things. Sincerely desire to hear his voice, it is the best thing that can happen to you in your walk with God. Let’s explore what the bible says.

What does the Bible say about Listening?

Throughout the scriptures, there are many examples and instances where God spoke directly to his sons and daughters. Other times he sent a messenger to deliver a word of counseling or advice to someone. This shows that God is always speaking but only those who listen will hear him. I pray that in 2021, we will hear his voice clearly in Jesus' name. AMEN.

In Deuteronomy 28 v 1 it is said: And it shall come to pass, if thou shalt hearken diligently unto the voice of the LORD thy God, to observe and to do all his commandments which I command thee this day, that the LORD thy God will set thee on high above all nations of the earth (NIV). As you go down the remaining verses in this chapter up to v 14, you will see that God pronounced blessings upon his people but that was preceded by the statement or condition- if you will hearken diligently to my voice. This reveals the importance of listening to God.

James advised us in James 1 v 19: My dear brothers and sisters, take note of this: Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak, and slow to become angry (NIV). The Holy Spirit told me that when we listen to his voice in all situations, it saves us from troubles and unnecessary mistakes. Dearest Father help us hear you more!

Also, Revelation 3 v 20: Here I am! I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in and eat with that person, and they with me(NIV). In this new year, our growth in God will depend on how much we can listen to his voice.

However, we should note that when we fail to hear God’s voice, we attract the anger of God upon us. In Deuteronomy 28 v15: But it shall come to pass, if thou wilt not hearken unto the voice of the Lord thy God, to observe to do all his commandments and his statutes which I command thee this day; that all these curses shall come upon thee, and overtake thee (NIV). Curses were outlined for those who refused to listen to God’s voice.

Dear friends, your identity and growth as a child of God depends on how well you listen to God because he is always speaking(John 10 v 27). He is either telling you of his plans for you or warning you about something. I pray that 2021 will be a year we listen to God’s voice the more. So help us, God. AMEN.

Thank you so much for reading. God bless you and have a blessed week of walking rightly with God.

Please kindly share on your status and with all your contact lists.
